Clean Oceans Dirty Secrets Period 2- Group 3
Out of all car oil in the world 8% of it is spilling into our oceans very 8 months. Some of the car oil spills from the cars onto the ground. Some of it seeps into the ground and into the ground water which leads to oceans. In other cases it may rain and wash the spilled oil into lakes and river which lead to the oceans. This is as much oil as was spilled in the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989.
Michelle Hester one day found a few dead birds on the shore became curious about how these birds died. When she researched a little more she found that the birds had stomachs full of stuff such as bottle caps and other plastic products. She assumed that the bird was hungry and ate a bottle cap but process kept going on. One day the bird was once again hungry but it was so full of trash (which he couldn't digest) that there was no room for food and it eventually died of starvation. Michell Hester says that this is happening because we keep leaving trash around and not throwing it away in its proper place.
The North Pacific Gyre is a body of water in the Pacific ocean that moves in a slow circular motion or current. Charles Moore discovered that trash, specifically plastic, is coming from Japan and United States. The trash enters the current and has a hard time getting out. Over time, the North Pacific Gyre became an area of floating trash (a.k.a. Plastic Soup).
Saal and Tillett found a couple abnormalities in water animals. One of them is that in some species, some of the male fish are producing eggs which is not normal. Another is that frogs are having development disorders with different parts of their bodies. Saal and Tillett discovered that these abnormalities may have been caused by the trash that humans make. After being in the water for a while, the trash gives off chemicals which are harmful to the water life.
The main chemical causing water life abnormalities is bisphenol A which comes from most plastic products. This chemical is made globally but we don't really know what type of destruction it cause to the environment and animals.
Bisphenol A comes from plastic water bottles, plastic bags, plastic containers, packaging, etc. After some time these plastic products end up flowing down our streams and rivers which lead into our oceans.
Charles Moore says that we are recycling "diddly point squat" or about 15%, which is very small compared to all of the plastic trash that isn't being recycled.
In the video we learned that coral reefs are dying because of pollution and this is bad. Since we like to keep and see the beautiful coral reefs, we should continue to recycle more and throw our trash in the right places. Also it talks about how we should always think twice when we throw something away, and where we through it away. To help this problem we should recycle daily and think about where its going.
Scary Fact from Charles Moore Video: "We use 2 million plastic water bottles in the United States every 5 mins." You did a very nice job putting a lot of detail into your wiki post. I did not really see a summary of your video though. 72/75 points
